Women, Babies & the Opioid Epidemic (3 CECs- Addiction and Recovery)

This presentation starts with the basics of opioid dependence--recognition, diagnosis and treatment, as well as an update on the current epidemic of overdose deaths and their causes. It explores gender-specific issues of opioid use disorders, and covers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). The content will include the use of standard diagnostic criteria, screening tools, current psychopharmacological interventions and a broad range of evidence-based and best-practice therapeutic and theoretical strategies.

This presentation will highlight the initiative begun in 2010 at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. A multidisciplinary team there has developed an initiative to improve with quality of care of infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Key interventions included standardized nonpharmacologic care coupled with an empowering message to parents, a novel approach to assessment, administration of morphine only on an as-needed basis, and transfer of infants directly to the inpatient unit, bypassing the NICU.

Trainers: Charles Atkins, MD & Matthew Grossman, MD

Opioids: Whole Person Approaches to Treatment & Recovery (3.5 CECs - Addiction and Recovery)

This workshop explores how we got to where we are with opioids, and what strategies, including medication assisted treatment, legislative fixes, wellness, therapeutic interventions, and such are being put into play to turn back the tide of disability and death. The program will explore how to accurately and thoroughly assess an individual, and work with them to construct reality-based plans that will move them forward in the direction of recovery and overall goals and aspirations.

As the majority of individuals with opioid use disorders have at least one co-occurring mental health problem, and often related medical issues, a whole-person, and highly individualized, approach will be emphasized. The content includes the use of standard diagnostic criteria, public-domain screening tools, current psychopharmacological interventions and a broad range of evidence-based therapeutic and theoretical strategies (CBT, DBT, 12-step, Motivational Enhancement, Stage of Change Theory, Harm Reduction, Recovery, Trauma-based therapies, Peer Support, Wellness etc.).
