When an organization as complex as child welfare strives to enhance and improve its delivery system a varied group of professional disciplines endeavor to share language and a set of core concepts surrounding the principle of recovery. Personnel from Judicial, Behavioral Health, Child and Family Services, Addictions, Mental Health and associated fields learn to collaborate, addressing areas as fundamental as: the struggles of a person with addiction attempting to effectively function as a parent, the effects of substance use by parents on children and the core concept of Recovery Capital.
Every day, agency personnel, clinicians and social workers are tasked with helping individuals in planning for a successful recovery to conquer their "problems". When we frame the conversation from this approach, planning is dictated by a deficits focus that often results in client resistance, frustration and unmet goals. Person-centered, strengths-based planning helps clients recognize their potential, identify and mobilize Recovery Capital and understand how their problems are barriers to their goals. Person-Centered planning supports a successful collaboration between agency personnel and the individual. In this training, participants will learn concepts of surviving and thriving that are integral to helping clients create goals. Trainees will learn strategies to foster a collaborative helping relationship that supports the ongoing process of planning. This interactive experiential training will teach concepts and strategies that can be implemented for successful client goal setting and improved recovery planning outcomes.
